National Professional Qualifications

National professional qualifications (NPQs) are a national, voluntary suite of qualifications designed to support the professional development of teachers and school leaders. They are trusted, transferable qualifications accredited by the Department for Education and they are designed to equip teachers with the expertise to lead sustainable improvement across their schools.

With the NPQs schools and trusts can have confidence that all their educators, from classroom teachers to leaders of multiple schools, are building and developing their practice from the same evidence-based framework.

Specialist NPQs

Rather than a whistle-stop tour of all the problems and challenges of middle leadership, the four specialist NPQs each provide significant depth on those issues most relevant to teachers’ roles, interests and common challenges.
These courses take 12 months to complete.

Leadership

The leadership NPQs have been reformed to a new and more flexible format since September 2021. The content has been adapted based on an evidence base from the Education Endowment Fund (EEF) and seeks to map out what best practice means for school leadership, in a move that takes these NPQs away from a more generic approach to leadership.
These courses take 18 months to complete

Programme Model

The programme will use ‘see it, name it, do it’ as an organisational structure for scaffolding learning to the point of mastery. The model is a highly applied and personalised approach coined by the internationally renowned Leverage Leadership Institute.

See it: The approach goes beyond theory by using current, real-life models of exemplary practice.

Name it: By identifying features of exemplary practice, the invisible is made visible. Participants reflect on their current practice and name their ‘gaps’.

Do it: Participants are guided through implementation planning with time for practice, peer feedback and the use of gap tasks.

Each NPQ is underpinned by a new content framework. These frameworks set out what participants should know and be able to do after completing an NPQ, and providers have used these to design their courses.
